Health Protection Service
Our health and well-being can be affected detrimentally by the surroundings in which we live. Over the last 100 years the impact of man on his environment has increasingly created problems some of which are only now being fully recognised.
The Health Protection Service is concerned with ensuring that statutes designed to protect public health are complied with and recommendations and guidelines followed. The service actively promotes good environmental health practice and provides health advice to the public and other agencies.
Our Health Protection team can help with a range of issues including:
- Food safety—including the investigation of food complaints and food poisoning; and the development of food safety programmes.
- Communicable disease advice including overseas travel
- Lead poisoning, lead paint testing and removal
- Drinking water quality
- Exotic mosquitos
- Recreational water quality, including swimming pools
- Toxic algae
- Shellfish safety
- Asbestos removal
- Hazardous substance control including the storage and sale of poisons
- Contaminated sites
- Resource Management Act compliance
