Access and guidelines

The Taku Wahi whare /house is for whanau /relatives of those admitted to Wairarapa Hospital with a serious or terminal illness. The whare /house is available to all residents of Wairarapa who meet this criteria. Priority is given to people who live outside of the Masterton area.

If you meet these criteria, please ask hospital staff to contact the hospital reception on your behalf.

Facilities

Taku Wahi has three double rooms and two single rooms.  There are eight beds in total. In the event of greater family numbers mattresses are available for marae style sleeping.

There is a fully equipped kitchen, or meals are available in the hospital Cafe for a reasonable cost.

There is a washing machine and dryer.  Sheets, pillowcases, towels and tea towels are provided and laundered.

Note that you are welcome to use the Hospital’s inter-denominational Chapel off the main corridor as another quiet place for reflection, or prayer.

Parking

There is limited parking outside of the whare. 

You need to bring:

  • Your own blankets or sleeping bags
  • Food
  • Personal care items

Security

All of the rooms are lockable and you will be provided with a front entrance key as well as a bedroom key.  A cost will be incurred if these keys are lost or misplaced.  

We will not take responsibility for any items removed from bedrooms if left unlocked.   

Accommodation fee

All users pay a non-refundable deposit of $10.00 to access the front door key to Taku Wahi. 

General Public: 

$5.00 per day up to three people.  

Over and above three people there is a charge of $2.00 per day.  

Special Access

 $10.00 per overnight stay.

Accessing Taku Wahi

On arrival at the front reception of Wairarapa  Hospital, sign the logbook giving name, address and the ward the patient is being admitted to. Take time to read the guidelines and rules for the whare before signing.

You will receive a package containing

  •  Front door key

  • Room key/s

  • Guidelines for staying at the whare

Taku Wahi House Rules

  • You will need to provide your own food. Please respect the food belonging to others who may be sharing the accommodation.

  • Consumption of food is strictly forbidden in the bedrooms. (waahi moe).

  • No sitting on pillows

  • No jumping on beds (children)

  • Keep whare and kitchen areas clean

  • Wipe down the whiteware regularly as you maybe sharing the accommodation with other families.

  • Please keep noise below nuisance levels

  • An inventory list of all equipment is available at the whare.  Please check before departure.

Please note:

  • Wairarapa DHB has a smokefree policy that applies to staff, whanau, residents and visitors

  • Alcohol and drugs are prohibited inside the whare and surrounding areas. 

  • No animals are permitted in the whare and surrounding area

  • Violation of the above or damage to the whare will result in an immediate eviction from the premises.

Children and young people

  • Children and young people up to 14 years old must not be left unsupervised in or around the whare.

    The restricted size of the whare can become tiresome for children.  It is suggested that they be provided with some activities to keep them occupied.
