In March 2006 Wairarapa District Health Board transferred their entire hospital form Masterton to Wairarapa Hospital, located adjacent to each other. The new purpose-built hospital isequipped to high international standards.
Located on the field between the existing hospital and Te Ore Ore road, the new hospital includes all inpatient, day patient and outpatient areas. With carefully designed co-location of support services, patients, visitors and staff enjoy the cohesive yet spacious environment, which is logical and convenient in it's layout.
Instead of just building new facilities and transferring existing healthcare services into them, Wairarapa District Health Board took the bold approach of examining its services and its patients' needs to find new ways to deliver services more effectively.
DHB staff and hospital design consultants worked together to find innovative design solutions. For example, the design makes the most of natural light, using four interior courtyards to create a pleasant environment for patients and staff. Services such as the emergency department and an acute assessment unit or the operating theatres and the Day Procedure Unit are co-located to minimise the movement of patients and improve work-flows.
